Todd Richter: Giving Back to the Institutions That Shaped His Journey

Richter’s first major academic milestone came at the College of William & Mary, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1979. Two years later, he completed an MBA at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business. Those experiences preceded a Wall Street career that ultimately extended across more than three decades.
After receiving his MBA, Richter joined Morgan Stanley. He remained there for 18 years, eventually leading the firm’s healthcare equity research division. His specialty included health insurance, managed care, and healthcare providers, sectors that experienced significant structural developments during his years in research.
In 1999, Richter moved to Bank of America and became managing director of its global healthcare investment banking group. His career earned 17 All-American Analyst designations as well as multiple Wall Street Journal All-Star Analyst honors. The progression from equity research to investment banking allowed him to apply years of healthcare knowledge to strategic transactions and corporate advisory work.
His later giving to Kelley reflects a direct connection between his professional experience and his interest in finance education. Richter committed $5 million to the school through an estate gift supporting the Graduate Finance Department, the Dean’s Office, graduate finance fellowships, and two endowed professorships in securities analysis.
William & Mary also received a $5 million commitment, directed specifically to its golf program. The gift provides a form of enduring support for student-athletes and can help a collegiate program maintain resources for coaching, recruitment, facilities, equipment, scholarships, and travel.
His philanthropic interests extend beyond higher education. Through his involvement with Bideawee, Richter helped establish the Bideawee Todd Richter Foster Program, expanding opportunities for rescued animals to receive temporary care before permanent adoption.
